System Failure?

Read the scenario. Who do you tell? What do you say?

“The coffee maker stops and the lights flicker.

Who do you tell?
What do you say?”

Video 2.3: Systems

Watch “Systems you need to know”.

6 Key Systems

Click each segment of the wheel to learn more.

Pressurization Oxygen Electrical Lighting Water & Waste Communication SYSTEMS

Pressurization & Oxygen

What cabin crew needs to know.

Pressurization

  • Cabin altitude: normally 6,000–8,000 ft.
  • Decompression: masks drop automatically.
  • Ears popping: normal during climb/descent.

“If cabin altitude exceeds 8,000 ft, oxygen is required.”

Oxygen

  • Passenger masks: drop from the PSU (Passenger Service Unit).
  • Portable oxygen bottle: for crew use or first aid.
  • Crew must don mask first before helping others.

“Pull the mask towards you, place it over your nose and mouth.”

Electrical & Lighting

Power and visibility in the cabin.

Electrical

  • Galley power: ovens, coffee makers, water boilers.
  • Circuit breakers: check if a galley item fails.
  • In-seat power: passenger charging ports.

“The coffee maker is INOP. I’ve checked the circuit breaker.”

Lighting

  • Cabin lights: main cabin illumination.
  • Emergency lighting: floor path, exit signs.
  • Signs: fasten seat belt, no smoking.

“The floor path lighting is not working in row 12.”

Water, Comm & Fire

Three systems that keep the cabin safe.

Water & Waste

  • Potable water: for drinking and galley use.
  • Lavatory: toilet, sink, flush.
  • Waste: bins and waste compaction.

Communication

  • PA: public address to passengers.
  • Interphone: crew-to-crew calls.
  • Call button & chime: passenger to crew.

Fire Detection

  • Smoke detector: in every lavatory.
  • Report immediately to the flight deck.
  • Fire extinguisher: located in the lavatory.

Match the Symptom

Select what the crew sees or hears, then match it to the system.

“Masks drop”
“Galley power fails”
“Floor path lights off”
“Interphone does not ring”

Reporting a Fault

Listen to the model, then use it in the challenge.

“The coffee maker in the FWD galley is not working.
It’s INOP.
I’ve checked the circuit breaker.”

Write the Report

Use the model to report these 3 faults.

Fault 1

Coffee maker — FWD galley

Fault 2

Call button — seat 23C

Fault 3

Flush — AFT LAV

Unit 2 Mini-Test

2. Where are the passenger oxygen masks located?

3. What do you check if a galley item stops working?

4. What does “INOP” mean?

5. Where is the smoke detector located?

6. Which system uses the PA and interphone?

7. What does the floor path lighting help with?
